Jamestown Community Center

For over 30 years, the Jamestown Community Center has been providing learning opportunities and safe space for young people in San Francisco’s Mission District. When Jamestown was threatened with closure in 1989, a group of neighbors kept a portion of the programs going for five years as volunteers. In 1994, the neighbors succeeded in raising funds to hire a director and rejuvenate a full set of programs. In re-designing the programs, the neighbors were committed to maintaining the bond between neighborhood youth and community members. They were also interested in developing a range of programs that would tap into young people’s interests, help them identify their strengths and talents, and give them opportunities and resources to excel.

In keeping with the neighbors’ vision, Jamestown’s mission is to mobilize the resources of families, neighborhood residents, and other community members to help young people realize their full potential as empowered and productive members of society. The Board of Directors—composed of parents, residents, community leaders, and young people—reflects this mission and the organization’s grassroots foundation. At the same time, Jamestown has grown and evolved significantly over the past ten years in an effort to meet the ongoing needs of young people in our community. Today, Jamestown provides 500 eight to eighteen year old young people and their families with a wide array of education, recreation, leadership, and support programs.
