Teen Programs

At Jamestown, we believe young people are changemakers. Our Youth Leadership Program provides 9th–12th grade students with the tools, mentorship, and experiences they need to thrive academically, professionally, and personally. Through hands-on learning, youth explore issues impacting their communities, develop critical thinking skills, and take action to drive meaningful change.

Developing the Next Generation of Leaders

Jamestown’s youth leadership programs empower high school students to grow as confident, self-aware leaders who drive positive change in their communities. Through a proven model grounded in social-emotional learning, peer mentorship, and civic engagement, teens build resilience, sharpen public speaking and advocacy skills, and develop healthy coping strategies to navigate life’s challenges and lead with purpose.

Whether they're stepping into high school or preparing for college and career, our leadership pathways meet youth where they are—and support them every step of the way.

Watch former YAPster Lizette's story!

She graduated from John O'Connell High School in May of 2017, and was a Girls Got Goals assistant coach at Buena Vista Horace Mann K-8 School. She is currently on our staff and has been at Jamestown since the 6th grade!

Lizette’s journey is a testament to the impact of Jamestown’s teen programs. From participant to mentor, she gained confidence, leadership skills, and a deep sense of belonging. Her story reflects why these programs matter—empowering youth to grow, give back, and inspire the next generation, ensuring that every young person leaves Jamestown with valuable skills and lifelong connections.

Our programs are designed to support youth at every stage of their leadership journey:

Community Mobilization for Change on Alcohol (CMCA)

For: Rising 9th Graders

CMCA is a dynamic, entry-level leadership experience that empowers 9th graders to make informed choices and take a stand against substance use. Through engaging workshops, peer support, and advocacy campaigns, students develop the tools and confidence to lead healthy lifestyles and influence positive change within their schools and communities.

Youth In Charge (YIC)

For: 9th & 10th Grade Students

YIC builds on the foundation set in CMCA, offering deeper leadership development focused on peer-to-peer health promotion and mental health awareness. Participants explore the connection between mental health and substance use, and gain the skills to:

  • Lead stigma-reducing campaigns

  • Host school-wide wellness events

  • Educate peers and influence school culture

  • Advise local decision-makers on youth-centered solutions

Supported by community partners and stipends that ensure equity and access, YIC reaches over 300 peers annually through youth-led initiatives across San Francisco high schools—while directly mentoring and supporting 10 core youth leaders each year.

Youth Apprenticeship Program (YAP)

For: 11th & 12th Grade Students

YAP is designed to build confidence, agency, and long-term readiness for life after high school. Our school-based programs prepare 11th and 12th-grade students for success beyond graduation by blending mentorship, real-world work experience, and college and career exploration. Participants engage in:

  • Paid apprenticeships

  • Leadership training

  • Financial literacy workshops

  • Personalized support as they plan for college, careers, or both

Through these programs, youth don’t just build leadership skills—they amplify their voices, strengthen their communities, and create lasting impact. Join us in empowering the next generation of leaders!
